French Lines

Sometimes a piece needs that special something to feel complete. French lines are often the solution. While they are especially appropriate with etchings and engravings, they are inherently versatile and can be applied to contemporary designs as well. Each line is drawn by hand using a ruling pen and various paints.

A line is more than a line

Line placement, line color, and line width are all important parts of designing with French linework. These decisions are often left up to the line artist, simply because experience informs design. Of course, if you have a vision in mind, we would be happy to collaborate with you. Infinite design possibilities are available.

Simple and Delicate

One evening years ago a young man passed this note with hopes to see a young lady again. This small gesture led to a long happy marriage, and when the happy memory was unearthed decades later it was brought into our shop to be framed.

Three delicate gold lines was all it took to elevate this design. Now this romantic momento is framed and protected for generations to come.

Complex and colorful

Sometimes a design that is more complicated better suits the object being framed. This example uses five lines, one watercolor panel, one marbleized panel, and three painted bevels. The colors in the linework and panels perfectly mimic those present in the butterfly.
